-Past chevre Spotlight: Matt Bar (named to The NY Jewish Week’s “36 Under 36”)
and his “Bible Raps” video
Prior to coming to Livnot in 2004 (Program #152), Matt Bar was a professional rapper and folk artist. He came back to Livnot in 2007 as a madrich for Galilee Fellowships (Program #197).
After Livnot, Matt went on to study at JTS and then at Pardes in Jerusalem. Out of his Livnot experience grew the idea to connect his passion and artistry for music to Jewish themes.
Today, Matt is the founder and Executive Director of a non-profit called Bible Raps. Since its inception, Bible Raps has reached tens of thousands of young Jews with Torah-rich performances in schools, Hillels, conferences and camps across the US and abroad. In 2011, Matt was named to The NY Jewish Week’s “36 Under 36” list, a prestigious list highlighting the dedicated lay leaders who are reordering our legacy organizations alongside community activists and social justice crusaders.
Matt had this to share about his Livnot experience:
“I always took pride in being Jewish but I didn’t really know too much about what Judaism was until I went on Livnot. The guides, the activities and the deep talks through the nights added up to the most significant two weeks for how I relate to my Judaism. I am forever indebted to Livnot for enriching my life thereafter.”
