The mystical city of Tzfat is known the world over as the home of Kabbalah, an ancient Jewish mysticism, and the spiritual centre of the Jewish people. Many rabbis, teachers and Kabbalists have been drawn to Tzfat over the centuries, filling the Old City with a spiritual soul which many Jews and Israelis search the world for. Sages who have been drawn to Tzfat include the Ari z”l (Rabbi Yitzchak Luria) a Jewish mystic and the father of contemporary Kabbalah, Rabbi Shlomo Halevi Alkabetz, a famous Kabbalist and composer of the song Lecha Dodi, and Moses ben Jacob Cordovero, a leading 16th Century mystic.
Now you can spend four days in the Old City of Tzfat, learning the ancient wisdom of Jewish mediation from Rabbi Meir Sandor, an acclaimed international expert on Kabbalah.
Experience the deep spirituality of Kabbalah in the beautiful surroundings of the Galilee and the ancient, mystical heart of Tzfat, the soul of the Jewish people.
The value of Kabbalistic Mediation
Meditation forms an essential component of Kabbalah. The conceptual insights of the Ari z”l (Rabbi Yitzchak Luria) into the Zohar, the famous Kabbalistic work of 2nd Century Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai, has deeply enhanced the spiritual understanding of Judaism. Kabbalah is known as both an inspired and an experiential form Jewish thought, meaning it is best understood by being practiced.
Kabbalah has many layers and depths to it, which Rabbis’ and scholars have spent many centuries uncovering. Elements of Kabbalah focus on things such as insights into the soul, the human aura, and the numerical value of the Hebrew alphabet.
Kabbalistic meditation is practiced to expand the range of consciousness, deepen personal experiences and strengthen one’s connection to spirituality and Judaism.
This intensive four day course focuses on the four main meditation methods of Kabbalah:
- Hitpashtut – Stripping Away: This is a clearing and mindfulness meditation which quiets the mind and aims to strip away bodily sensations from consciousness.
- Aliyah le-Shoresh ha-Neshamah – Ascent to the Root of the Soul: This is a visualisation method which transforms imagination into a deeper, more spiritual experience.
- Histaklut – Gazing: This is a method of visual kinaesthetic attention to help expand awareness and awaken the potential of human consciousness.
- Yichudim – Unifications: This is an introduction to the most complex of Kabbalistic mediations, exploring the many hidden secrets of the Torah.
Each day will have morning, afternoon and evening practice sessions, with group sessions of the background and theory of Kabbalah, and further study of the meditation methods revealed in the Torah and of the Ari z”l. There will also be visits to the Kivrei Tzaddikim of the Holy Cemetery of Tzfat and spiritual field trips around the Galilee.
The lead instructor of the program is Rabbi Meir Sandor, Ph.D. He has been teaching Kabbalah and Jewish spirituality in Sharon, Massachusetts for over 25 years, focused on the meditation techniques of the Ari z”l. Rabbi Sandor was a student of the late Rabbi Joseph B Soloveitchik, and received his Semichah from the Rabbi Issac Elchanan Theological Seminary at Yeshiva University. He received his Masters in Religious Studies from Yale University, and has a doctorate in Medieval Jewish History with a concentration on Kabbalah from Harvard University. Rabbi Sandor is a visiting professor at Brandeis University and Hebrew College, and teaches a range of Jewish studies including philosophy, medical ethics, history and Kabbalah.
